Thanksgiving Tablescapes: You Can Do It!

Before I start, I’d better come clean. I’m not hosting Thanksgiving this year.

So it’s easy for me to say you can do it, but you can with a little ingenuity and some good shopping genes.

There are lots of website that show you how to use what you already have. I adore these creative ladies, but even I (who never met a set of dishes I didn’t like) find them a little intimidating. I’ve been collecting their gorgeousness on my Pinterest board, though.

There’s still time to get out to Pier 1, World Market, Target, or Kohl’s and put together your Thanksgiving table — and it’s probably all on sale. Here’s a beautiful table set by a friend of mine for her annual fall party. It’s simple, beautiful, and easily attainable by any hostess.

Your friends don’t care if your chairs don’t match. It’s the hospitality and your generous spirit that they love.

Writer’s Workshop: My So-Called Garden

Writer’s Workshop Prompt: You were supposed to start a garden this summer…share the fruits of your labor.

I had big plans for the garden this summer. I really did.

I had dreams of lush shrub borders underplanted with flowering perennials that kept my flower vases full all summer.

I had visions of freshly made pesto and caprese salad direct from my organic garden.

I had in my daily planner a dip into a cool summer grass of morning while I tended my yard and pots, but that would require there to actually be dew on the grass, for the morning to actually be cool, and for me to get up early enough to see said dew. And apparently I also forgot to stake the tomatoes in recent weeks.

Reality sometimes bites.

Food Cult: Veggie Tales

So we tried a new vegetable last night.

We’re trying to be both adventurous and healthy. I have heard rave reviews of braised fennel.

Indeed, fennel has an anise taste all its own. I love black licorice, so I figured, how bad could it be?

I followed the recipe directions.

I braised it in my trusty Le Creuset pot in olive oil. I even added cucumber slices to braise them, too, a la Julia C. I used white wine and sweet fruity vinegar to make the sauce. It should have been good.

Yet both were kind of boring. Meh.

Even Music Man, who usually applauds my attempts to give him healthy and low-calorie meal choices, said that it wasn’t a keeper.

On to broccoli dip. I promise I’ll use fat-free ingredients wherever possible. 🙂
