Purple Haze Tablescape

Tiered centerpieces have always intrigued me and I’ve saved pictures and pinned more than a few sites with elaborate tiered beauties. When I re-discovered matching purpley Partylite candle rings in my stash closet, I figured that I had the inspiration for a new fall tablescape. It didn’t quite turn out as expected, but I present my Purple Haze Tablescape — a little bit more of “kissing the fall sky” before we launch into Christmas.Purple Haze Tablescape Intro

My inspiration for this ‘scape started with this tiered centerpiece from Note Songs 2013. I cannot find the original post, but do visit Shelia at Note Songs and say “Hi!” I liked the way the textures of the white roses, artichokes, and glass played together.

I started with my low footed cake plate which I previously used here with a different candle ring, and then added a taller cake plate. I plopped the rings on them, but because they are made of grapevines, they were a little stiff and a little tall for my design. I pulled out a silver leaf platter that I had picked up while thrifting, and then added the Tiffany compote we received for a wedding gift thirty-one years ago. I threw on a couple of bunches of succulent (but fake) grapes to continue the purple theme. Finally — a pleasing proportion in a five-minute centerpiece.

My new dining room table has a dark finish, and I have been learning new ways to work with its beauty. I pulled out a burgundy crocheted runner which picked up the warm reds and browns of the candle ring, but still stood out against the dark wood. This tablescape wasn’t looking for the drama of dark against light, but my white china and white candles gave a hint of contrast.

My husband and I almost always eat at the tables I have prepared for photographing, but this table was completed before I went into the hospital for my knee replacement. When I came home from rehab, dear friends brought an entire dinner over and prepared it in our kitchen that very night. Steaks and baked potatoes never tasted so good as they did while sitting at my new table chosen for entertaining guests and decorated with many of my favorite fall pieces. We put the sour cream container in the carnival glass during Friday night’s “home from the hospital” dinner, and the juxtaposition of the humble plastic tub and the iridescence of the dish were happily at home together.

As the afternoon moved into evening, the mercury glass votives spread their gentle shine across the table.

Many thanks go out to friends and family for their well wishes during my surgery and rehab.

I was honored by the outpouring of love from both my friends and family and from my blogging community. It was wonderful to wake up every morning and read a new message from strangers who have become friends through blogging. Thanks to the caring people in my life for all of their good wishes — I am well on my way to recovery and a new life with fewer limitations.

And one thing more…

Although I am a child of the sixties, I was never a proponent of drug use and the waywardness of the time. The phrase just seemed to fit the story of my table design. I have included Wikipedia’s discussion of Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze for your reading enjoyment.

Got my bags, got my reservations,
Spent each dime I could afford.
Like a child in wild anticipation,
I long to hear that, “All aboard!”

  1. A beautiful table, and how nice that you got to enjoy it with sweet friends and dinner you didn’t have to cook yourself while you were recovering! I haven’t done a purple table yet, but I love it when others do, always so pretty. Still sending you prayers for no pain and quick recovery. Thanks for sharing this at the We Call It Olde Link Up! -Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com

  2. Jennie. I am so glad you are recovering and doing so well and that you are up to doing a table for us. The tiered centerpiece looks lovely, I especially like the pleasing look of the artichokes. The finish on artichokes compliments beautifully with the wood on your new table. The amethyst candle holders with the white tapers gives the table a perfect finishing touch. Very lovely. Again I am so glad that you are recovering from your surgery so well. May you have a blessed Thanksgiving….. Candy
